The memorial has the statutory task of researching the history of the Hohenschönhausen prison in the years 1945 to 1989, providing information through exhibitions, events and publications, and encouraging discussion of the forms and consequences of political persecution and oppression under the communist dictatorship. The number of visitors in 2017 was around 440,000 people, of whom just under half were pupils.
Exhibitions, education, events, research and guided tours on the former Stasi prison and the history of the former restricted area of Berlin-Hohenschönhausen are offered.o As a rule, former prisoners guide visitors through the prison and inform them about the prison conditions and interrogation methods of the GDR State Security Service.
