Victims of NKWD (Russian for: People's Commissariat for Internal Affairs)

Between May 1945 and October 1946, the NKWD had established the Berlin camp on Genslerstraße. About 20,000 people were interned there. It is estimated that more than 1,000 prisoners died at that time. They died of hunger, coldness and disease and were buried in mass graves. The remains of the nameless dead were buried in the Hohenschönhausen municipal cemetery on Gärtnerstraße after they were found in 1995 during search excavations in the vicinity of the camp.
