The lake is a legacy of the last European ice age. Situated on the Barnim plateau, it was the settlement site of Stone and Bronze Age nomads. Unfortunately, their relics were lost after National Socialist zealots searched for "Germanic" traces here but failed to properly secure the collection. Today the lake is a recreation area for the neighbouring Neu-Hohenschönhausen.
