The Second World War in Europe came to an end in Karlshorst on May 8, 1945 with the signing of the unconditional surrender by the Wehrmacht.
On February 8, 1950, the Provisional People's Chamber of the GDR approved the law establishing the Ministry for State Security. The Ministry was given its headquarters in the rooms of the Lichtenberg tax office at Normannenstraße 22, where the Stasi Museum and the Stasi file archive, which is part of the Federal Archives, are located today.
In 2022, a memorial and place of remembrance will be erected on Roedeliusplatz with the artwork "Inclusions" by Roland Fuhrmann. It will commemorate the victims of the jurisdiction of the Soviet Military Administration (SMAD) and the facilities on Roedeliusplatz that were later taken over by the GDR State Security.
