Memorial of the Socialists
The Memorial of the Socialists was inaugurated in 1951 under W. Pieck. Until the end of the GDR, various important figures of socialism were buried at the memorial.
The Friedrichsfelde Central Cemetery, also known as the Socialist Cemetery, became a memorial to the socialists. The cemetery in Berlin's Friedrichsfelde district was opened on May 21, 1881 and became the preferred burial place for leading representatives of the workers' movement after the burial of Wilhelm Liebknecht in 1900. As the final resting place of important personalities and representatives of contemporary history, Friedrichsfelde Central Cemetery is a mirror of political events and intellectual and cultural currents of the 20th century.
