Sky over Nöldnerplatz by Christian Hasucha (2022)
Artist: Christian Hasucha (2020)
Material: aluminum, steel
The work is the result of a competition for the artistic design of the square and was completed in January 2020.
The work "Himmel über Nöldnerplatz" by Christian Hasucha won the competition for the new design of this square. Although the competition was not themed, it was recommended that the competition entry should be based on Heinrich Zille and also address the issues of poverty and housing shortages. These are two topics that have increasingly become the focus of political discourse in Berlin in recent years. The artwork was installed at the beginning of 2022 and caused very controversial discussions among local residents.
The sculpture consists of an ensemble "of a cast aluminum house tent closed on all sides and a pole light in spatial and formal proportion to the western lawn." Together with the title "Himmel über Nöldnerplatz", the sculpture's symbolic reference to the problem of homelessness in the middle of the gentrified city becomes apparent, as the sky is what those homeless people have above them who live outdoors and spend the night on park benches, for example.
The work is intended to remain there permanently.
