Friedrichsfelde Central Cemetery

The cemetery was opened on May 21, 1881 and became the preferred burial place for leading representatives of the workers' movement after the burial of Wilhelm Liebknecht.

"The Friedrichsfelde Central Cemetery in the Berlin district of Lichtenberg is one of the most famous cemeteries in Berlin. As the burial place of numerous social democratic, socialist and communist politicians and activists, it was nicknamed the Socialist Cemetery even before the First World War. The socialist memorial was later built on the site. The entire cemetery is a listed monument. [...] The official opening of the cemetery, now known as the Friedrichsfelde Central Cemetery, took place on May 21, 1881.[5] For the first time in Berlin, burials of the poor were also possible here because the city paid the burial costs. These burials were discontinued in 1911, as many wealthy Berliners chose the cemetery as a burial site due to its attractive design."
