Between May 1945 and October 1946, the NKWD had established the Berlin camp on Genslerstraße. About 20,000 people were interned there. It is estimated that more than 1,000 prisoners died at that time.

“Specialised Camp No. 3” of the Soviet Secret Service NKWD
Start your tour at the small Hohenschönhausen Municipal Cemetery in Gärtnerstraße, where a memorial site serves to remember the inmates who met their deaths after World War II in the “Specialised Camp No. 3” of the Soviet Secret Service NKWD (Russian for: People's Commissariat for Internal Affairs) due to hunger, cold and sickness. Some 20.000 people were incarcerated in the camp from May 1945 to October 1946.
